The Inspiration For MUNCH LESS MEAT
Chantal Cooke of Passion for the Planet is the creator of the Munch Less meat Challenge. So what inpsired her?
"As part of the London Leaders initiative I was asked what SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT and QUALITY OF LIFE mean to me.
My answer? They're pretty much the same thing. They both mean adding rather than taking away from the environment (this includes people and nature).
Whether it’s a lifestyle, a building or a business, sustainability is key. But it must not prevent others from achieving sustainability themselves (selfish sustainability isn’t real sustainability).
Sustainable is much more than just “green”. It’s about our health; physical, mental and spiritual. That’s why health and environment are the ying & yang of Passion for the Planet’s programming – you can’t have one without the other.
Additionally, sustainable should also mean “fit for purpose”. For example a house has to deliver all we need and expect from our homes, not just tick eco boxes.
This is the same for “quality of life”. I want a life that’s rich and fulfilling. And I want luxury too. But luxury at the expense of other people or nature isn’t rich and fulfilling. So sustainable development plus quality of life is the route to “responsible luxury”, a road we all need to travel. Defining luxury is individual, being responsible must be universal.
And that means understanding that everything is interlinked and being accountable for the impacts of that inter-linking.
This leads on to some of London’s greatest sustainability challenges. On a very basic level these can be boiled down to consumption and waste.
London needs to reduce how much it consumes in terms of energy, food and other resources, it also needs to reduce the amount of waste it produces.
My experience is that good work is being done on transport. We’re not there yet but behaviour is changing and this isn’t an overnight process. I’d also like to see packaging and litter tackled and this is where business can play a positive role.
I am passionate about making London, the UK and the world sustainable – in all senses of the word. It’s a passion that’s been with me since I was a child and it’s what led me to co-found Passion for the Planet; a company dedicated to helping people live a sustainable life by inspiring them with ideas and information.
Making informed food choices will help move London closer to being a sustainable city with “one planet living” at its heart. Part of my personal contribution to this is being vegetarian. It would be great to see more and more people adopting a more sustainable diet. Although this is easier in London than in many cities, it’s still not as straightforward as it could be or needs to be.
Meat consumption at the current rate is unsustainable: it impacts negatively on wildlife, it increases poverty and has been shown to be one of the largest global emitters of CO2.
And that’s what inspired MUCH LESS MEAT – to help Londoner’s move towards a lower meat diet."

London’s leading lights in sustainability are brought together by the London Leader’s programme, to deliver real change, and inspire others to do the same.
The London leaders programme is an initiative of the London Sustainable Development Commission, supported by the Mayor of London.
The programme has been designed to inspire and catalyse positive change, demonstrate sustainability in action, and increase London’s capacity for sustainable development leadership. The central objective is to bring leaders together from across London and from all walks of life, to demonstrate what is possible when individuals from different sectors work together in an innovative way to tackle London’s challenges.
The aim is to motivate and empower individuals, organisations and communities to take responsibility and make the changes necessary to realise the vision of world class-sustainable London.
